Frequently Asked Questions

Clear Communication. Lasting Results. Real-World Training.

At Ruff Rules, we believe dog training is about more than just commands—it’s about building a relationship based on trust, clarity, and consistency. Our approach focuses on teaching both dogs and owners, so you not only get a well-trained dog but also the knowledge and confidence to maintain that training long after our sessions end.

We don’t believe in quick fixes, gimmicks, or one-size-fits-all training. Every dog is different, and our job is to figure out what motivates them, what challenges them, and how to help them succeed. With a balanced training approach, we use both motivation and accountability to create real, lasting change.

FAQs

What training methods do you use?

We use balanced training, which means we incorporate positive reinforcement (food, praise, toys) to reward good behavior, along with appropriate corrections (leash pressure, e-collar, prong collar) to set clear boundaries. This helps dogs understand expectations and make better choices.

Do you use prong collars and e-collars?

Yes, but only in a way that’s fair, ethical, and effective. These tools are not punishment—they are simply ways to communicate with your dog. We always start with teaching and motivation first, ensuring your dog fully understands the training before introducing any corrections.

Is balanced training right for every dog?

Yes! Every dog benefits from clear expectations, structure, and leadership. We tailor our approach to fit each individual dog, ensuring they receive the guidance and support they need to succeed.

How do I know which training program is right for my dog?

If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help! Private lessons are great for owners who want to be hands-on, board & train is best for those looking for immersive training, and daily in-home training is perfect for owners who need structured reinforcement while they’re at work.

Will my dog listen to me after training, or just the trainer?

Our goal is to make sure you have the skills and confidence to lead your dog. We don’t just train dogs—we train owners, too. With proper follow-through, your dog will respond to you the same way they do with us.

What if my dog has severe behavioral issues?

We specialize in helping dogs with reactivity, aggression, fear, and anxiety. Our Behavioral Modification Board & Train is designed specifically for dogs with more serious issues. We focus on building confidence, setting clear boundaries, and giving owners the tools to manage behaviors effectively.

What happens after training?

Training doesn’t end when your program does—it’s an ongoing process. That’s why we provide go-home lessons, follow-ups, and continued support to ensure your dog’s progress lasts.
